Diabetes can affect individuals of all ages and nationalities. The two primary types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2 diabetes. During pregnancy, there is also a form of diabetes known as gestational diabetes. People living with diabetes face challenges in managing their blood glucose levels due to issues with insulin production or utilization.

Type 1 diabetes, also known as type 1 diabetes mellitus, insulin-dependent diabetes, T1D, and T1DM, is a chronic autoimmune condition. While it commonly develops in children and teenagers, it can also occur in adults. This condition arises when the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment involves the use of insulin injections or an insulin pump to regulate glucose levels, along with the management of nutrition and lifestyle.
Type 2 diabetes, also referred to as type 2 diabetes mellitus, T2D, or T2DM, occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body is unable to effectively utilize insulin. Treatment involves managing lifestyle and nutrition, and medication may be necessary in certain instances. It is possible to prevent, delay, or even reverse type 2 diabetes in some cases.
Related Conditions include chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), vision loss and nerve damage. Many medical conditions are linked to diabetes. Good blood glucose control can help in their prevention and management.

Vision loss and nerve damage are caused by high blood glucose over a long period of time. Regular eye tests and foot exams are important for people with diabetes.
Common symptoms of diabetes
The most common symptoms of undiagnosed Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are:
- Extreme thirst and a greater need to urinate: As excess glucose (sugar) builds up in the bloodstream, fluid is pulled from the tissues. The loss of fluid makes you thirsty. As a result, you may drink and urinate more than usual.
- Frequent hunger: Without enough insulin to move sugar into the cells (Type 1) or insulin resistance prohibiting insulin from entering the cells (Type 2), the muscles and organs are low on energy. This triggers intense hunger.
- Weight loss: Despite eating more than usual to relieve hunger, rapid weight loss sometimes occurs. Without the energy that glucose supplies, muscle tissues and fat stores simply shrink. Unexplained weight loss is often one of the first symptoms to be noticed.
- Blurred vision: If the blood glucose is too high, fluid may be pulled from the lenses of the eyes, affecting the person's ability to focus clearly.
- Feeling tired: If cells are deprived of sugar, you may become tired and lethargic.
- Slow-healing sores, yeast infections, urinary tract infections, etc.: High blood glucose reduces the immune system's ability to fight infections.
